we own a domain and have hosting through inmotion. we really need some advice on where to start, what ftp programs are best, where to find those programs for a reasonable price and any basic info on website building in general. i'm not inclined to download software from the net that i could buy in a store provided it isn't too expensive. thank youWe're trying to start a website but are completely in the dark. any tips on tutorials for newbies?
For an FTP program, use FileZilla. FileZilla is free and is what I have used for years.
If you want to easily edit your site without having to do any coding, I would recommend getting a CMS (Content Management System) such as Joomla. We're trying to start a website but are completely in the dark. any tips on tutorials for newbies?
Hello Mr. Inquisitive (what a perfect Yahoo Answers! name...)
I've been through the mill web-wise, trying hosting, building bits myself, using designers etc.
Thing is... it's relatively easy to buy some cheap web hosting, get a designer to build you a site (or do it yourself template style), and get it looking lovely.
But the challenge - particularly if you plan to sell/make money online - is ensuring it gets noticed; namely traffic.
I have a pasta website myself (http://www.pasta-recipes-made-easy.com), which has been up 7 months and received 8500 thousand unique visitors last month. I'm pleased with that, and loving the content/site building process.
The reason though? I'm a technical wizard? Nope. Have I great web experience? Nope. I've a passion for my topic and I'm using a great online system I found, called Site Build It.
This is far from Get Rich Quick, so if you're not willing to put in business-building work Mr., I wouldn't go near it. But that doesn't sound to be the case. Therefore it's probably worth looking into...
I found the system perfect for those of us who remain 'in the dark'. But you're not in the dark for long...
The rough idea is that everyone has a passion, or knowledge of a particular topic (this could be anything - teaching kids how to ice skate, how to cook pasta (mine), how to make kids' toys, how to Google better, whatever).
Site Build It - helps you:
- Create, step by step (real tortoise style), a niche website based on your passion
- Create engaging, keyword-optimised content about this
- Attract traffic to the site (which, quite honestly, just keeps on growing if you do it right)
- And finally, find various ways in which to 'monetise' that traffic.
As I say, I think SBI might be right up your street. Particularly as the key here is this - build it right, credibly, and with passion, and it'll keep working month in, month out.
(Just don't worry about needing 'technical' I.T. skills - I can't programme or anything like that to save my life and I've managed it easily.)
I have a page on my pasta recipe site that details my SBI adventure, and how it works etc. It's here: http://www.pasta-recipes-made-easy.com/a鈥?/a> You are more than welcome to mail me via the site too if you have any questions.
All the best and good luck with your search!
Matt
Depending on what you want your website to do, you can find a lot of tools and resources for free. for FTP just google FileZilla, It's the best I've ever used and it's free. For graphic design try GIMP, it's very robust and it's also free. For html editors you can use NVU, or Kompozer, both free.
If this is an online business I suggest you visit http://buildit.sitesell.com/cgi-bin/adb/鈥?/a>
It's the best way to build a successful online business. It will tell you everything you need to know and it has all the resources you need to do it.
I hope this was useful.

I see filezilla mentioned for FTP, which is an excellent program. It's true that most of what you need can be found for free. I would recommend building your first website with wordpress. I'm going to include a few article links below that I wrote on the subject below.
Google loves wordpress so it is great for SEO purposes. It has many plugins to give wordpress functionality to create ecommerce stores, add content, add adsense, and many other great functions. There are tons of tutorials and templates available.
